This elegant vintage (antique?) “what-not” is a unique, statement piece. It has been completely rejuvenated – beautiful butterflies and moths have been hand painted onto the shelves and the legs and finials have been gilded using gold leaf, then slightly distressed. The underside of each shelf has been painted in a deep indigo blue shade using furniture paint. The ceramic castor wheels are original and fully functional.
The gilding and paintings have been sealed with several layers of lacquer and the original wood has been nourished with beeswax.
As this is a vintage piece there are blemishes and flaws that reflect its previous life – a few areas of veneer have been lost from the edges of the moth shelf and one finial has lost its very top carving. The butterfly shelf has a small gap in the underside where the planks have moved apart slightly.
It’s definitely not perfect but is still rather lovely!
As the shelves are relatively slim, I would not recommend placing heavy bottles onto them.
