The Maneki Neko (‘Beckoning Cat’) is a common Japanese figurine which is displayed at the entrances to shops, restaurants and other businesses and is believed to bring good luck to the owner. We small businesses will take any help we can get and if it’s this cute who can resist? There are many legends about the Maneki Neko, most of which revolve around the cat being a lucky spirit who repays kindness with luck and fortune. So this is a reminder to be kind to others and that kindness will always be repaid.
The cat is seen in various versions with different paws beckoning, depending on what the person displaying her wants to have beckoned in. With the left paw raised, she is beckoning in customers, with the right paw raised she’s beckoning in money/fortune, and with both paws raised she’s beckoning in customers AND money (although in Japan some people don’t like her raising both paws, as they believe it is too greedy). So with this Maneki Neko you have that choice!
