Description

I began going places I shouldn’t in earnest in Berlin a few years ago. I have since come to learn that this activity is called Urban Exploration (often shortened as UE, urbex and sometimes known as roof-and-tunnel hacking). Essentially it is the exploration of manmade structures, usually abandoned ruins or hidden components of the manmade environment.

I have produced a series of limited edition (50) photographic prints called Urban Fragments from these images which attempt to capture the beauty of elements often overlooked.

This photograph is called “Looking at the stars” and is from the Urban fragments series of photographs by Roger Newbrook (www.rogernewbrook.co.uk/berlin-fragments.htm).

We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.

Oscar Wilde, Lady Windermere’s Fan.

The image shows the livery on the old wrought iron gates from the former Scottish and Newcastle Brewery site in Newcastle upon Tyne. now at home in an architectural salvage yard in County Durham. The old blue gates are now bent and rusted but the iconic blue stars remain ever recognisible as a symbol of a great north eastern company.

The bright blue stars and geometric grid pattern of the old gate make this a a striking image that will look great on any wall.

The images in the Urban fragments series are sometimes quirky, sometimes leftfield but always elegant and beautiful. They show beautiful small details of urban living that caught my attention during my travels.

This print is a perfect birthday or Father’s Day gift.

The print is mounted, backed and wrapped in cellophane. The vsible area of the print is 8×8″. The print is mounted in a 12×12″ card mount.

The mount is made of Hayseed Textured acid free board. It has a natural white shade, and is a touch lighter than Antique White. It has a cream centre and an attractively textured surface.

12×12″ frames are widely available in framing, DIY and department stores.
