Japanese Collection: Japanese Furoshiki Découpage Wooden box

My Japanese Collection decoupage made from vintage Japanese block prints and pictures.
. The design is taken from a Furoshiki gift I was given when I lived in Japan. Furoshiki is a traditional Japanese square wrapping cloth, tied and neatly knotted to transport food, clothes or gifts.

The patten is self printed onto sumi rice paper with Navy back ground and white Japanese symbols. There are beautiful gold coloured hinges and fastening.

Each box is Unique and a one off. They are hand decorated and finished with decoupage and paint effects and deliberately vintaged to give it an old and cherished feel.
Découpage is the art of decorating an object by gluing coloured paper cutouts onto it in combination with special paint effects, gold leaf and other decorative elements.
I love the art of découpage it’s so flexible. You can découpage almost anything, boxes, picture frames and even fine art.
I began to do découpage many moons ago when I lived in Japan. There they use Washi papers to cover tea boxes, small figurines of Japanese Characters and even eggs. As an Expat I went to classes run by lovely Japanese ladies to learn many Japanese crafts. When I came home I continued to use my skills of découpage, developing new methods with different papers, incorporating paint effects, mouldings and plaster work. I découpage beautiful jewellery boxes of various shapes and sizes. I also like to découpage coasters and small picture frames and other items.
