This relief Green Man has been individually handcrafted out of textured stoneware clay, using real oak leaves and decorated with oxides, resulting in a natural stone-like finish that looks weather-washed and that fits well in any part of the garden. This is frost proof.
I have long had a fascination in ancient symbolism and history, particularly in carvings of medieval buildings and churches. I also love the natural environment so the green man is of interest to me as he is said to help balance the cycle of life. He would make a special gift to anyone who takes great care with their garden or vegetable plot.
I make the basic shape using a homemade mold from my own sculpture then I build up the individual facial features and add leaves. Fired to 1240C. Every green man is individual and one of a kind. My potter’s mark is at the top.
He is approximately life sized at L30.5cm x W24cm x D7cm.
He is frost-proof and ready for hanging in your garden, although he should stay in a sheltered place to avoid pockets of water expanding to ice in harsh winters. My own green men have survived on sheltered walls in my garden for the last 20 years or so, all year round, with no problems. The clay used (a grogged/textured stoneware) and firing temperature ensures they can cope with any extremes of temperature.
