Description

Haldon Belvedere is a stunning castle in Higher Ashton, near Exeter in Devon. I always think of it as a real-life fairy castle! Its distinctive triangular shape with turrets and clean cream walls are beautifully characterful. Haldon Belvedere is visible from miles around due to its position high up on Haldon Hill amongst Haldon Forest – it can be seen from many locations around the city and it’s instantly recognisable.

Built in 1788, Lawrence Castle was designed at the height of the Romantic Period in the Georgian era by Sir Robert Palk in memory of his friend, Major-General Stringer Lawrence. It is now owned by the Stringer Lawrence Memorial Trust.

Grade II listed, Haldon Belvedere was restored in the 1990s by Devon Historic Buildings Trust. It has 99 steps up its stone cantilevered spiral staircase to the roof and stunning panoramic views of the Devon countryside as far as the Jurassic coast, Dartmoor and the South Hams.

This high quality A4 print is supplied unframed. Created from an original hand-drawn illustration by Devon artist Helen Leslie Illustrator.
