This linocut is inspired by Tales from Earthsea by Ursula K LeGuin. Reading Earthsea always feels like visiting a real place with its own history and culture – nothing is obvious on the surface and you have to spend time there getting to know it better.
I love Earthsea because it’s simply and beautifully written and is a fascinating fantasy world not quite like any other. The passage illustrated in this print is from the start of an epic poem that tells how Earthsea was created.
“Only in silence, the word.
Only in dark, the light.
Only in dying, life.
Bright the hawk’s flight on the empty sky.”
