I originally designed the first of these bags after a friend of mine underwent a botched surgery which left one kidney unattached to her bladder and so required a nephrostomy bag. She became reclusive as the bag was so bulky and visible. The straps that were provided weren’t great and allowed the bag to slide down her leg.
I made the bag to let her go out in public without feeling so self conscious. The flap is lined with Sherpa style fleece and is designed to fold over backwards to offer a softer surface if the bag is rubbing. The extra long adjustable strap allows the bag to hang below the kidneys or bladder and has a fleece line slider to help protect your shoulders from being rubbed sore. There are optional pockets (inside and out) for storage and I use waterproof ripstop material for the lining to help protect against any leakage. I also add a small zipper in the base of the bag so you can empty your catheter bag without having to try and remove it first.
When I gave my friend her bag she was thrilled and started going out shopping or meeting with friends – the bag hid her catheter bag and looked like a regular bag. It was also more comfortable than the old arrangement of straps.
After I made my friend her bag I discovered that there were a lot of others who were struggling and since then I have sold these bags so several countries around the world.
This bag has several variations and options and all are quilted. If you would like one of these bags WITHOUT quilting please see my other listing. Thank you.
I started sewing after my partner suddenly became disabled and virtually bedridden. We spent a long time in bed with him randomly drifting off to sleep leaving me with a lot of time on my hands. I found that I took to sewing very quickly and soon started using a machine. That year I made all of our Christmas presents which ended up with my family asking for me to make them more things.
As my partner’s condition settled down he was able to be more active, leaving me more time to do more sewing.
He now helps a little with my paperwork as he’s able so that when I get home from work I can get straight to the sewing machine.
