Here we have the classic 1780s style, the Italian Gown – the seamed-back evolution of the English Gown that dominated much of the 18th century up to this particular decade. Perfect classic style for spring and summer picnics and garden parties!
My pattern block uses documented shapes taken from extant garments. The bodice front closes in the centre using pins (option to close with hooks and eyes instead available on request). The skirt is cut to be worn retroussée. The bodice is lined with linen.
Every garment is 100% handsewn using historical stitches and construction, made bespoke to your measurements to be worn over shift, stays and a bum pad or false rump.
PRICE IS GB£650. This includes:
– bodice mock up and fitting;
– matching or co-ordinating petticoat;
Normally, the Italian Gown would not be trimmed but would instead be ‘enhanced’ by a profusion of fluffy white millinery in the nature of caps, neck tucker, elbow ruffles and the most ruffled of aprons. Please advise if you would like to order any of these items as well, to go with your gown.
The price does NOT include:
– fabrics. I have a range of fabrics available or you can provide your own. For summer daywear, a block printed Indian cotton (all the rage in France during the period) or a lovely linen would be perfect. For evening, of course it must be silk! And throughout the Anglo-American world, a fine wool is always appropriate.
– shipping by courier if not collected in person.
I am based in the UK. Orders from overseas are very welcome if you’re happy to work with me remotely with a “virtual fitting” by video call.
