My journey into beading started over 15 years ago with a magpie like obsession for collecting sparkly things. I came across a design for a cha cha bracelet on an American site (Fire Mountain Gems) which involved wiring Swarovski crystal elements on to an extending steel bracelet. One of the first of these bracelets went to a School Prom with one of my nieces. This led to making wedding ‘things’; another niece wanted a ‘mountain’ of crystals on a hair comb – I managed a ‘hill’ – but she was still delighted. As other nieces got married I made hairpins, earrings and necklaces for bridesmaids, mothers of the brides and guests. In between this I was making gifts for family friends and workmates having moved on to including gemstones in my designs. I also love the folklore around gemstones. When I give a gift the person always wants to know what the gemstone is and whether its supposed attributes bestow love or health or wisdom for example. This is part of the fun of working with gemstones and can sometimes add to the thoughtfulness of a gift.
So my collection of beads, like Topsy, just grew and grew and I had to enrol a cabinet maker to make a large chest of drawers to store some of my collection which, by this time, was spilling out of many, many boxes (a state all jewellery makers and crafters will recognise). So now that all my family have more jewellery than they can wear I have decided to open a wee Etsy shop so I can continue my journey into jewellery making which has now expanded into other mediums such as gem setting, macramé, bead weaving, soutache and kumihimo. They say the secret to keeping your mind active is to keep learning new things; so this is my aim. I hope you will continue to come back to my shop to check out what I have been making. Thank you.
