Handmade Gifts for Every Budget: Under £15, Under £30, Under £60

The assumption that handmade means expensive is wrong. Here is a guide to what independent UK makers offer at every budget level — from stocking fillers to significant gifts.

Under £15

This is the stocking filler and small gift territory, and there is more here than most people expect.

Handmade greeting cards from UK illustrators: £3–6. Limited print runs, original artwork, often on recycled card. Small batch soy candles in tins or votives: £6–12. Enough to scent a room properly with two or three burns. Hand-stamped leather bookmarks: £6–10. The kind of thing people keep for years. Small resin earrings from UK jewellers: £8–14. Each pair genuinely unique. Natural handmade soap bars: £4–8. Made in small batches with ingredients you can read. Hand-illustrated fridge magnets or prints: £5–12. More personal than anything from a gift shop.

Under £30

Mid-range is where handmade begins to substantially outperform mass-produced equivalents.

Hand-thrown ceramic mugs: £18–28. Every one slightly different, genuinely made to last. Sterling silver stud earrings: £18–28. Simple, well-made, wearable daily. Handmade soy candle in a jar (200g+): £14–22. A proper candle with 35–45 hours burn time. Original art print (A5 or A4): £15–25. Limited edition, signed, from a working UK artist. Hand-knitted or crochet small items — plant hangers, small pouches, face cloths: £12–22. Leather card holder: £22–30. Will outlast anything from a high street retailer.

Under £60

This is the territory of genuinely meaningful gifts — the kind that get remembered.

Hand-thrown ceramic set (two mugs, a small bowl): £40–55. A considered, lasting gift. Sterling silver ring or necklace, possibly personalised: £28–55. Something they will wear for years. Original watercolour or oil painting (small): £35–60. Original artwork, not a print. Handmade leather wallet: £35–55. Full-grain leather, personalised if wanted, decades of use. Hand-woven or embroidered cushion cover: £30–50. The kind of thing that defines a room. Bespoke commission deposit — many jewellers and ceramicists will start a custom piece for £40–60 down.

A note on perceived value

Handmade gifts almost always look and feel more valuable than their price suggests — particularly in comparison to mass-produced gifts at the same price point. A £25 handmade sterling silver necklace looks and feels more considered than a £25 high street equivalent. Part of what you are paying for is the difference in how it registers as a gift.
