The candle market in the UK is saturated. Mass-produced candles with vague “artisan” branding sit alongside genuinely handmade products in ways that make comparison difficult. Here is how to tell the difference and what to look for.
Wax matters more than it should
Paraffin wax is a petroleum byproduct. It burns, but it produces more soot than plant-based alternatives and releases compounds that some people find irritating in enclosed spaces. Most independent UK chandlers use soy wax — derived from soybean oil — which burns cleaner, slower, and cooler. Some use coconut wax or beeswax, which have different burn characteristics and cost more. The best handmade candles specify the wax clearly.
The wick question
A cotton wick burns cleanly and consistently. Some cheaper candles use wicks with metal cores, which burn hotter and can cause issues with the vessel. Independent chandlers almost universally use cotton or wood wicks. Wood wicks produce a soft crackling sound and a wide, even melt pool — they have become popular for good reasons.
What “cold throw” and “hot throw” mean
Cold throw is how a candle smells unlit. Hot throw is how it smells when burning — how far the scent carries and how it develops with heat. A candle can have strong cold throw and weak hot throw, or vice versa. Independent makers who know their craft balance both. Fragrance load — the percentage of fragrance oil relative to wax — is a key variable; too low and the hot throw is weak, too high and the candle sweats or burns unevenly.
Scent profiles worth knowing
UK independent chandlers are producing scent profiles that the high street does not stock. Beyond the standard vanilla-amber-sandalwood territory, you will find: cold spring air, sea salt and kelp, Scots pine and woodsmoke, Earl Grey and lemon, petrichor (the smell of rain on dry earth), and highly localised blends based on specific landscapes or places. These are worth seeking out.
Vessel and reuse
The best independent candles come in vessels worth keeping. Concrete, recycled glass, unglazed stoneware, hand-thrown ceramic — once the candle is finished (and properly cleaned), the vessel has a second life. This is worth factoring into the value calculation.
