The handmade candle market in the UK has grown significantly. Here’s how to understand what you’re buying — wax types, wicks, fragrance loads — and what actually makes a candle worth its price.
Wax types
Soy wax is the most common wax used by independent UK chandlers. It is a natural byproduct of soybean processing, burns cooler and slower than paraffin, and produces less soot. It also holds fragrance oil well. Coconut wax burns even cleaner than soy and has a particularly good fragrance throw — candles made with it tend to cost more but perform noticeably better. Rapeseed wax is the most locally sourced option for UK makers — rapeseed is grown extensively in Britain and supports UK agriculture. Paraffin wax is a petroleum byproduct used in almost all mass-produced candles. It burns hotter, can produce more soot, and does not hold fragrance as naturally. Most independent UK chandlers avoid it.
Wicks
Cotton wicks are standard in quality handmade candles and burn cleanly with minimal soot. Wooden wicks produce a soft crackling sound as they burn and give a wider, more even melt pool. They are a genuine choice, not a gimmick — though they require a slightly different burning technique. Let the melt pool reach the edges of the jar before extinguishing on the first burn.
Fragrance load
Fragrance load refers to the percentage of fragrance oil in the wax. Most quality handmade candles are loaded at 6–10% of the wax weight. Below 6% and the scent throw is often weak. Above 10% and fragrance oil can seep out of the wax. The distinction between fragrance oils and essential oils matters if you are sensitive to synthetic compounds — essential oil candles cost more but use only natural aromatic compounds.
Burn time
A 200g soy wax candle should give 35–45 hours of burn time when used correctly: first burn long enough to achieve a full melt pool (usually 2–3 hours), trimming the wick to 5mm before each subsequent burn, and never burning for more than 4 hours at a time.
What the price actually reflects
A handmade soy candle from an independent UK maker at £14–22 reflects quality wax, quality fragrance oils, hand-pouring in small batches, a cotton or wooden wick, hand-labelled and often hand-packaged, made and sold by one person. The £4 supermarket candle reflects none of these things.
